Green dye in Maitai

If you were walking past the Collingwood Street Bridge today, you may have seen some suspicious green liquid leaking into the Maitai River.

A nelsonlive.co.nz reader sent us this photo, which was taken under the bridge this afternoon, and although it looks bad, Nelson City Council have confirmed that it’s “harmless dye,” which is routinely used for possible pipe leaks.

“This is actually a green dye that council routinely uses to test for possible cross-contamination of sewer and storm water systems. You can rest assured the dye is totally harmless and will soon disappear,” says a council spokesperson.

“This dye is highly-concentrated so very bright and patches are sometimes visible in our waterways.”

They also say they usually put a sign up to let passers by know what it is.
