The region’s hardest hitting charity event is back and its organisers are putting the call out for willing contestants.

Fight 4 Victory 3 will be held at the Trafalgar Centre on November 5, a little over 18 months after the event’s second edition. And the team behind the event say now that the venue is confirmed, they need to find those willing to pull on the gloves and get in the ring.

Victory Boxing programme director Paul Hampton says they’re keen to hear from people who would like to give the event a go. “It is a big commitment to put yourself forward for this. Firstly, they need to strongly believe in what we’re doing here. But also someone who would be excited about being a part of a great Nelson event and that can contribute to its success.”

In the first two events, those to get in the ring have included police officers, sports people, business owners, chefs, hairdressers, engineers and lawyers.

The fight nights have raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust, which runs a youth programme for hundreds of school kids.

Paul says the money raised from the event goes to supporting those kids’ classes.

“We have a very busy gym and certainly, as the programme grows and we reach deeper into the community, it takes more resources. We set ourselves very high standards so this fundraiser is a really important part of us doing things as well as we can.”

Paul says taking part is a massive commitment.

“The training is significant. It is at least three months and takes a lot of time and dedication but we’ve had some great stories of those who have spoken about it in hugely positive ways. Some have said it’s been life-changing for them.”

Each selection is made on a case-by-case basis, says Paul, but the most difficult part is getting even match-ups.

“We’ve already had lots of enquires and people looking forward to being part of it, but it really comes down to how we can match up those entrants. At this stage, no one is confirmed for this year’s event until we can confirm a match-up.”
