A large canvas shelter that was donated to the Tasman Great Taste Trail has been stolen leaving supporters and users of the trail “hugely disappointed”.

The shelter was donated by TM Covers a year ago and was erected on the trail at Harley Rd where it provided a popular stopping point. The shade sail cost “many thousand dollars” and the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust says it’s theft 10 days ago is a “hugely disappointing action on a community owned facility.”

“This would have required thieves taking a vehicle and tools to unscrew and cut down the shelter,” the trust says. “If anyone knows of a new sun shade please appearing in a local garden please contact the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust.”

Tasman’s Great Taste Trail has had huge community support and the monetary value of volunteer effort to date is around $300,000. This support demonstrates community ownership of the facility and contributes to social connectivity and well-being – the donation from TM Covers is one of the many examples of the great community support.
