Metservice issued a severe weather warning early this morning, forecasting up to 350mm of rainfall in the region.
Heavy rain was expected this morning with an intensity of 30mm per hour around the northwest ranges but the rain is expected to ease tomorrow morning.
“In the 24 hours from 9 am Wednesday to 9 am Thursday expect 250 to 350mm to accumulate about the northwest ranges, 150 to 200mm about the Richmond Range and 90 to 140mm elsewhere.”
Metservice warns that this amount of rain can cause rapidly rising rivers and streams as well as slips and localised flooding.
The rain has been attributed to a strong northeasterly flow and is expected to also affect Northland, Mt Taranaki, the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Marlborough, Buller and Westland.
