Nelson’s most successful national sporting team has been given a lift by the region’s top newspaper group.

The Mike Pero Nelson Giants has teamed up with Page Media Ltd, which publishes Nelson Weekly, Waimea Weekly and nelsonlive.co.nz.

The newspaper group has signed on as the print media partner for the Giants’ 2016 season.

Giants captain Sam Dempster says the NBL basketball season is shaping up to be a big one for the three-time champions, with a team stacked with local players and a move back to their home court at the Trafalgar Centre.

“We’ve got a good local core and two imports who have fitted in really well with the group, and with Jarrod Kenny coming back from Perth as well it is an exciting team to lead.”

The Giants spent the weekend at a pre-season Blitz tournament in Porirua, before starting the season with a four-game away trip, starting on March 11. Sam says the entire team is looking forward to getting back inside the Trafalgar Centre for its home games. “Playing at Saxton’s was nice but it’s not home. All of us are excited to get back there. Nowhere else in the country competes with our crowd, it’s always a huge buzz playing in front of the Giants fans and it definitely helps us.”

Sam will lead a strong local core, including former Waimea College students Tom Ingham and Nic Trathen and former Nelson College student Finn Delaney. Also back for another season is Giants legend Phil Jones. Sam says it’s a big plus to have the former Tall Black back on the court.

“Phil coached me when I was about seven years old, so it’s crazy to think that I’ve gone from being coached by him when I was so young to now playing with him. But he’s an inspiration to all of us really, watching him play and then getting the opportunity to play with him is great.”

The Giants first home game is April 2. For ticket information or to enquire about season tickets, visit www.giants.co.nz
