Intense rain across the region has resulted in widespread surface flooding and trees down. The Civil Defence Emergency Operations Centre and Council staff have followed events throughout the night.
We are not aware of any evacuations, but water is close to many properties.
Further rain is still to come over the next few hours, and the Maitai River in Nelson is currently a concern. Emergency services and Council contractors are on site monitoring the river.
Earlier in the night the Wairoa River reached 20 year flood with extensive surface flooding around the Brightwater area.
In Golden Bay the Anatoki River has reached 10 year flood and there is surface flooding in many parts.
A full assessment will be possible in daylight is reached, however we are aware at present of the following:
- Maitai Road has been closed at Ralphine Way due to flooding risk from the Maitai River.
- Water across SH6 at Brightwater Bridge, may not be passable depending on flood levels
- Golden Bay area: Surface flooding: including Ferntown, Waitapu Splash, Upper Takaka, Lindsay’s Bridge
The MetService severe weather warning is still in place for Nelson and the Richmond ranges.
It is recommended that people take extreme caution around rivers and streams, and stay away if practicable.
Please note that driving conditions are hazardous and people are urged to take care.
