Dempster brothers prove to be kings of the court

Mike Pero Nelson Giants captain Sam Dempster joined forces with his two younger brothers, Aaron and Nathan, to win the Burger King 3×3 Quest Tour three-on-three basketball tournament at the Tahunanui Beach Reserve tennis courts on Saturday.

The Dempster’s Team Stoke won the open men’s final played in hot, sunny conditions against Team James Anderson 22-10, to secure a place in the national final of the series in Auckland’s Aotea Square on April 2.

The winner of that tournament will receive an all expenses paid trip to the World Tour Masters in Beijing.

“It seemed to be a good day out,” Nelson Basketball Association general manager Pete McNae says.

“There were 22 teams and there were very good numbers through the teenage boys and girls, although there were entries in the open women section, which was a bit disappointing.”

The Burger King 3×3 Quest Tour was making its third stop in Nelson in the last three years, with another seven events scheduled throughout the country before the national final in April.

Yung’s Jordan Lindbom, Sam Seelen and Tony Jenkins beat 2K’s Max Darling, Josh Friend, Lachie McNae and Emil Friend in a tight under-18 boys’ final 11-10.

Sparklers won the under-14 girls grade.

Warriors won the under-14 boys.

The Girls won the under-16 girls.

Another One won the under-16 boys and 1910 won the under-18 girls.
