Police, Search and Rescue and the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club have been called out to two separate rescues in Nelson Haven this afternoon.
The first involved a male swimmer who was rescued beside the buoys off Tahunanui Beach after he tried to swim in the direction of Haulashore Island.
The second incident involved an inflatable mattress with two girls on board, which has since washed up on Rocks Rd.
Police say they have information that the two girls that were on the inflatable mattress have since made their way on shore, but it is unconfirmed.
“We initially had reports of a swimmer struggling in the water swimming towards Haulashore Island, he was located in the water near the beach and picked up by search and rescue. The second two people are reported as having been washed up on an inflatable mattress and as yet we still don’t know their exact status. We believe they may be back on shore but we are just trying to locate them,” says Sergeant Brett Currie.
