While we’re in need of more rain to hold back the drought, some Nelsonians may be disappointed at having to stay inside for the next couple of days.
This morning, Metservice issued a severe weather warning, predicting heavy rain fall for the ranges of northern Westland, Buller, Northwest Nelson, Nelson Lakes and the Tararua Range.
Metservice says heavy rain is expected to hit the ranges of Northwest Nelson and Nelson Lakes, including Kahurangi National Park on Thursday night and continue throughout the day on Friday.
In the 16 hours from 10 pm Thursday to 2 pm Friday, 100 to 150mm of rain is expected. However, this may increase to 180mm in Northwest Nelson.
Metservice says rainfall rates may reach 25 to 35 mm per hour during Friday and thunderstorms will be likely.
This condensed rainfall will cause rivers and stream levels to rise rapidly. Metservice urges people within the area, especially those in the ranges and about Kahurangi National Park to take extra care and keep up to date with the latest forecasts.
A strong wind warning has also been issued for Friday, it is expected to affect Marlborough, Wellington, and Wairarapa with gusts over 130 km per hour in exposed areas.
