The investigation of the proposed Southern Link will proceed to the next stage of study after NZTA today released its strategic business case, which highlighted a need for the road.
The strategic business case was released online this morning. It is the first of four steps that the project needs to progress through before the road will be built. But it will be encouraging news for its supporters, including Nelson MP Nick Smith and Nelson mayor Rachel Reese.
Among the key benefits from a new road are reduced journey times, a boost to the local economy, improved community safety and wellbeing and improved tourism opportunities, according to the report.
Progress Nelson Tasman’s Craig Dennis, who is supportive of the road, says it’s a great step forward.
“We’re thrilled that it’s progressing to the next stage. We welcome the release of the report and it’s a huge step forward to have the need for the road recognise.”
