Michael Massie, 20, has been sentenced at Christchurch District Court for taking police on a 700km chase across the South Island.

Pedestrian hit and killed by car

A man in his 20s died near Mapua last night after he was hit by a car while walking along the state highway.

The incident happened on Te Mamaku Drive at about 10.25pm on Friday night.

The driver of the vehicle involved was uninjured in the incident and was helped by police at the scene.

Just before the crash, police had received phone calls from a concerned motorist about a man on a bike, who was riding in a way that “caused some concern”.

A bicycle was located a short distance from where the pedestrian was struck and killed and enquiries reveal that the cyclist and pedestrian are one and the same person. The death has been referred to the Coroner.

Nelson Police would like to hear from motorists who travelled along The Coastal Highway and Te Mamaku Drive on the evening of Friday November 6 who may have seen this cyclist heading towards Nelson.

Nelson Police would also like to hear from any truck driver who was travelling along Te Mamaku Drive towards Motueka at about 10.20pm last night.

Any responses can be directed to Detective John NICHOLLS at Nelson Police Ph 5463840.
