Nelson’s Luke is South Island’s strongest man

Luke Slotemaker isn’t just Nelson’s strongest man, he can now lay claim to being the strongest in the South Island.

Luke was the overall winner of the Vortex Spas Strongman Challenge at the A&P Show over the weekend. Luke muscled out challengers from Kaikoura and Christchurch to reach the top of the podium and says it was a great weekend.

“I’m really happy with it. We had some cool equipment donated to us which made it interesting.”

Luke – who is also the event’s organiser – says he will be running it again next year and is hoping to encourage competitors from the North Island. “This year it was a genuine South Island competition but I’m hoping to get some guys from up north here next year. Some are already talking about it.”

It is the second year the strongman challenge has been held in Nelson and Luke says the competitors were thrilled with the weekend. “They all enjoyed it and were really happy.”

In second place was Matthew Gardyne of Kaikoura and third was Hayden Lee of Christchurch.
