You wouldn’t normally expect to see an 80th birthday party at McDonald’s, but one very special Tahunanui local says she wouldn’t want to be anywhere else for her big day.
Frances Smith, who is also known as “Granny Smith” by her grandchildren, was surrounded by what she calls her “gang” of good friends at Tahunanui McDonald’s on Thursday morning to celebrate her 80th birthday.
The party was in true McDonald’s style, complete with McDonald’s memorabilia, party hats and cake.
The mum of seven is a frequent visitor to the restaurant, which is just around the corner from her house. “I love coming here,” she says. “I bring my grandson here every second Wednesday. The staff know me so well that they know my order off by heart.”
Frances’s good friend Ruby Aberhart says she is the “most wonderful person,” and is always looking after people and putting others before herself. “She’s pretty special,” says Ruby. “Anytime someone has a birthday, she makes the cake. She’s a very giving lady.”
McDonald’s Tahunanui manager, Vaughan Warren, says that they don’t normally hold birthday parties at their restaurant, but they made an exception for one of their favourite customers.
“She’s definitely a customer we like to see walk through the door,” he says. “She’s a class act and all the staff enjoy seeing her.”
