Sitting on the corner of Trafalgar and Bridge street, the Wakatu Hotel was the most well known public house of its time, providing a social hub within the settlement.
The hotel was built as a store in 1843 by merchants and licensed as a public house two years later.

It has changed hands several times and at one point was bought at an auction for thirty-nine pounds by a man who had been born there.
Today it boasts a restaurant, sports bar, gaming facilities, garden bar and 22 rooms.
