Inner city trees receive sprucing

The 150 trees lining our city’s streets will receive a pre-summer sprucing ahead of the tourist season.

Nelson City Council contractors will be out in force on CBD streets for the next one-three weeks replacing tree guards and laying crushed lime.

Many of the city’s cut-leaved plane trees and pin oaks have outgrown their tree guards.

The council says the replacements will be safer, reducing the risk of people tripping or stumbling on uneven ground.

The new material will be a consistent pale gold colour, and will pack down well over the root plate and pavement edge.

Councillor Eric Davy says the city trees are a valuable source or shade over the hot summer months.

“Nelson is a wonderful place to be in the summer, and the trees just add shade and greenery to our city streets. It’s great to see them being well looked after.”

The council requests the public give contractors plenty of space when they are working.
