Richmond School gets to national final


Richmond Primary School has finished runner up at a national Rippa Rugby tournament in Wellington today.

The Richmond team was representing the Tasman Makos region after emerging as the top local team during various tournaments, the last in Rai Valley featured the top two schools from Nelson and the top two from Blenheim.

The two-day “National Rippa World Cup” started yesterday with Richmond recording comfortable wins over Auckland, Canterbury, Poverty Bay and Wanganui.

Today, Richmond beat North Harbour 50-15 in the quarter final before a semi final against Bay of Plenty went to extra time. Richmond won the golden point tie-break with a try after having to defend an initial BOP attack.

In the final, Richmond faced defending champions Counties-Manakau. The South Auckland team were too good for Richmond, winning 35-20.

The competition is run by the New Zealand Rugby Union and starts with around 600 primary schools throughout the country. This year each team was representing a country taking part in the Rugby World Cup. Richmond was paired with the United States.
