Two Nelson Police Constables saved a man from a burning house in the early hours this morning.

The pair were the first on the scene of the Atawhai Drive fire about 5.45am and broke into the burning building to rescue the man from an upstairs bedroom.

Once he was safely out the officers re-entered the building as there was a suggestion a second person may be inside, however there was no one else in the house.

A third Police Officer also entered the burning building with a fire extinguisher and attempted to put the fire out.

One of the officers and the rescued man required treatment for smoke inhalation.

Senior Sergeant John Price said the officers’ quick actions had saved the man’s life.

““The officers who entered the burning house did so at some personal risk and their brave actions saved the life of another person.”

Senior Sergeant Price said the fire was being treated as suspicious.
