Nelson College is through to the final of the national secondary school football tournament after a stunning 2-0 win at Jubilee Park today.
Two second half goals from Kevin Obed and Mat Todd-Smith were just reward for the Nelson side that dominated possession and territory for much of the match against MAGS from Auckland.
Nelson College coach Davor Tavich says he was happy with how his team played today. “We were solid at the back and we were good with the ball, the pitch wasn’t flash but I thought we were good enough. I don’t think they created much so credit to the boys at the back and in midfield for not letting them create chances.”
Both goals came down the right flank of Nelson, the first was crossed in where Obed put it past the keeper from close range, despite falling over as he hit it. The second from Todd-Smith was curled in from the right edge of the box.
“They were two beautiful goals,” says Davor. “Especially the second, that was a bloody beautiful goal. I’m very happy with how we played.
“Now we have the final tomorrow, hopefully we can win it and be champions of New Zealand.”
The final tomorrow at Saxton Field kicks off at 1pm and Nelson will play Sacred Heart.
