Man with fake gun arrested at Mall

An incident involving an imitation firearm in Richmond sparked a  swift response from police who were swarming over the Richmond Mall on Wednesday morning.

At least four police cars and a police dog handler descended on the mall after a concerned member of the public reported seeing a man threatening someone with a firearm in the mall car park at about 11.30am. Police took a man into custody at about midday and recovered a gas powered imitation pellet rifle from the boot of a car.

Nelson police communications manager Barbara Dunn says they are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident in the car park. She says the man was standing by a silver Mitsubishi Galant with two associates and was seen to be abusing a woman driver of another vehicle that had parked behind his vehicle.

The man then returned the object to the boot of his car and the three males walked into the mall. The offender was arrested shortly after.

Police would like to speak to the woman who parked behind the vehicle. She was believed to be driving a people-mover style vehicle. Police would also like to speak to anyone else who witnessed the incident.

Anyone with information should call Sergeant Kyle Bruning at Nelson Police on 5463840. Information can also be given by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
