Staff upset with ‘gutless’ closure

The former manager of Jean Jones in Richmond Mall is disgusted at the “gutless” behaviour of her employers, after she and three staff lost their jobs when the national chain of women’s clothing stores went into liquidation on Friday.

“We had no indication whatsoever that anything was going to happen,” Tania Rich says.

“The first thing we knew was when the receivers or liquidators came in and closed the store – the mall management didn’t even know,” she says.

“The way this has been handled is disgusting. They are so gutless.”

Tania says she hasn’t heard anything from her employers since Friday, but is not expecting any good news.

Tania says she left another job just “four or five weeks ago” to take up the position as manager of Jean Jones.

A sign on the door of the store says ‘Closed until further notice”. The Jean Jones’ website was also shut down with a notice saying ‘Down for Maintenance’.

Richmond Mall manager Belinda de Clercq says she found out about the store’s closure on Friday.

“We haven’t heard anything yet,” Belinda says. “We will have to see what the liquidators say.”

Jean Jones has 17 stores nationwide.
