A severe weather warning and severe weather watch have been put in place as a moist north to northwest flow travels across the South Island.

Heavy rain can be expected over the Richmond and Bryant ranges from this morning through to around midday Tuesday, with the heaviest rain likely to be early Tuesday morning.

The heaviest rain is expected to be in Westland (especially north of Fox Glacier), Buller, Nelson Lakes, and western Nelson, where 150 to 250mm could accumulate about the ranges, and 70 to 100mm are possible about remaining parts of Buller, western Nelson and northern Westland over a 27 hour period.

Metservice say this is a significant amount of rain, especially about Buller, and people are advised that streams and rivers are likely to rise rapidly, with surface flooding and slips possible.
