Burmese woman assaulted in Nelson

Nelson police would like to speak to a member of the public who came to the assistance of a Burmese woman who was being assaulted by an unknown man in Kawai Street about 7.30am on Tuesday.

The victim was walking to work at Nelson Hospital when she was approached by a man in his late 40s or early 50s who walked from the direction of Franklyn Village. He was walking with a female companion.

The man verbally abused the victim and then grabbed her and started shaking her.

The offender is described as European with short light coloured hair, possibly greying, of thin build and tall. He was wearing worn jeans and a jacket with a zip up the front.

The victim was shaken but unharmed during the incident. Police believe the assault could have been much worse if the member of the public had not intervened and would like to speak to that person.

Police would also like to speak to anyone else who witnessed the incident and anyone who has information about who the offender may be.
