Rubbish truck flattens light pole

Rubbish wasn’t the only thing the driver of an Enviro Waste truck collected when he drove into a Salisbury Rd business in Richmond on Friday.

Drivers on Salisbury Rd had to avoid an unexpected obstacle just after 1pm after the truck driver hit a street light pole, knocking it over the road.

Fortunately, the only thing that was hurt as the metal pole crashed to the ground was the truck driver’s pride. Even more surprisingly, traffic flow was not too disrupted on Richmond’s busiest road because the pole created a bridge spanning over Salisbury Rd, allowing cars to pass slowly underneath.

The truck driver, with the help of a member of the public, was able to pull the pole to the side of the road before the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived.

A new, driver-feedback solar-powered speed sign was also flattened by the truck. The sign was purchased by the Tasman District Council and erected this month.
