Community Planting Maitai

Dig in for the Maitai

A call is going out to the public for help to plant a wide range of native shrubs at a community planting day this Saturday August 1.

The planting day is part of Project Maitai/Mahitahi, which aims to improve the health of the Maitai River. The plants will create habitat for wildlife and provide a natural environment and shade for the river.

The work builds on efforts at a community planting day in June in the same location, where about 60 people turned up on the day. Council is hoping to double the volunteer effort this time around as there is a large area to be planted up. Free sausages and hash browns will help provide sustenance.

What: Maitai public planting day

When: Saturday 1 August, 10.30am – 2.30pm

Where: Just below the Maitai Camp – keep an eye out for signage

Bring: Gumboots

All ages welcome. If there is bad weather on the day, planting will be postponed until the next day on Sunday 2 August.
