Twenty runners ticked off a major bucket-list challenge on Sunday, completing their first ever marathon.

The Monaco Midwinter Marathon, in its second year, saw 300 runners compete a marathon, either by themselves, as part of a duo or as part of a six person relay team. Of the 70 doing the full marathon, 20 were doing it for the first time.

Organiser Stu Cottom says that’s a fantastic result.

“You always remember your first marathon, vividly, so hopefully this has planted the seed for many of them.”

Nelson’s Brian Kemp was the overall winner, coming in with a time of 2 hours and 53 minutes.
The event also raised several thousand dollars for the Mental Health Foundation and Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust.

Stu says the success of the event means it will be back in 2016, with a date of June 19 already penciled in.

“It was pleasing to see so many people there and I’m very keen for it to go on.”
