The Nelson city council are advising residents to secure any “potential projectiles” as Met Service have issued a severe wind weather warning for the region.

A series of deep lows are expected to pass through this week with severe westerly gales  expected for northwest Nelson, as well as Otago, South Canterbury, Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay. Gusts are expected to reach up to 130km/h in exposed places.

A front is moving northwards across the South Island and lower North Island this afternoon and evening, and winds are expected to ease behind this front.

westerlies are likely to rise to gale in these areas again tomorrow, and could become severe about Nelson, Southland, Clutha, Dunedin, Central Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa.

Metservice say winds of this strength have the potential to damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures, as well as making driving hazardous for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles.
