Federal young guns learn tough lesson

The young guns of Federal Black had the chances, but not the nous, to overcome Marlborough side Arotea Kiwi at Saxton Field on Saturday.

The four-team premier grade is dominated by Tasman this year, which is undefeated after three rounds, but has had a couple of close calls with draws against Federal Titans. Tasman are favourites to take out the title this year, according to Nelson Hockey development officer Craig Brett. “Tasman are a strong team with guys who have national hockey league experience, so they are the team to beat.”

Federal Titans are made up mainly of older players, with the club’s other team, the top emerging talent. Last year Federal won the competition with a combination of the two teams.

There are five senior mens hockey grades in Nelson and five womens grades.

In the women’s top grade, Tasman and Federal are the two top teams.
