Home brewers and beer enthusiasts alike came to the Honest Lawyer on Saturday afternoon to sample and rate 24 craft homebrew beers from around the region.
SOBA event organiser, Bill Fennell, says the competition is peer judged by entrants and members of the public who score each beer out of 50.
“All the scores get chucked into the computer and mashed up so we can come up with the top three winners. The prizes are all related to homebrew like malts and hops and yeast as well as tee shirts and caps,” says bill.
He says SOBA currently have around 19 members in Nelson who advocate craft and home brewing.
“SOBA is like word of mouth advertising for the craft beer industry.”
We caught up with Bill and some of the contestants to find out what goes into a good home brew.
