Fire services are investigating the cause of a house fire in Ruby Bay this afternoon.
The house, owned by a young family, was not occupied at the time of the fire and Mapua Volunteer Fire Brigade senior station officer Aaron Thawley says the family are safe and are being supported by their friends and family.
He says it is unknown at this stage how the fire started.
“When we arrived the fire was smouldering. I noticed a flame at the back of the house so we sent a crew in and the kitchen dining area was well alight,” Aaron says.
The fire did not spread to the bedrooms but the house has significant smoke damage. Smoke could still be seen billowing out from the iron roof after the fire was extinguished.
