New venture may see International bands on Nelson stage

A new business venture has been launched in the hope of bringing live international music acts to Nelson.

The idea for Showcase Nelson was originated by Nelson business consultant, Stu Allan, who has been working on the project for around a year.

The proposed annual event will include a food and beverage festival to showcase regional produce as well as the music. The first event is scheduled for February 2016 and Showcase Nelson are in the process of securing an act for the event. Suggested music artists include Annie Lennox, Mark Knopfler, Bryan Adams, Peter Gabriel, Van Morrison, Bryan Ferry and Simply Red.

Showcase Nelson has met with Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council, Hon Dr Nick Smith, the Economic Development Agency and Nelson Tasman Tourism, and many other public figures and private investors to gain support for the project.

Significant economic benefits are also expected from the concerts, particularly for the accommodation and retail sectors.  Fundraising opportunities for the likes of Rotary, Lions and local colleges will also be offered.

It is reported that Taranaki’s two sold-out Fleetwood Mac concerts held in December  2013 attracted new visitors to the city and returned a net total of $9.56 million to the region’s economy.
