Police investigating an unexplained car fire on the Whangamoa Saddle north of Nelson have removed the vehicle from the scene.
Detective Senior Sergeant Ciaran Sloan said Police were dealing with a difficult and dangerous location.
“Our priorities are to keep the people working at the scene safe and to protect the integrity of the vehicle and the evidence inside,” he said.
Police were assisted with the recovery by the Fire Service, Urban Search and Rescue personnel and a commercial crane operator.
Detective Senior Sergeant Sloan said a more detailed examination of the vehicle would then be undertaken at a safer location.
Police are making a range of inquiries to help establish who the deceased person is and the sequence of events that led to the car fire.
Police would like to speak to anyone who saw a 1995 silver Nissan Sunny Saloon between 1 and 2pm on Sunday afternoon in the Whangamoas.
