The whirring of blades the crushing of metal and the heat of fire drew crowds to this year’s Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter annual Open Day today.
The event featured Fire Service, Coastguard, Saint John and Civil Defense along with the Rescue Helicopter crew in an effort to create awareness of the work done by the different groups.
A winch demonstration saw Nelson local, Cindy Day, hoisted into the air by the helicopter and swung around.
She says it was a totally new experience for her but she enjoyed it.
Chief crewman of the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, Paul Bryant, says the Helicopter operates upwards from Karamea to the Marlborough Sounds.
“We operate 24/7, most of our work is either medical emergencies or vehicle accidents.”
