The Nelson City Council are focusing on creating new play areas in the city with $614,000 of additional funding allowed for creation of new playgrounds in the city as part of the Long Term Plan.
Rutherford Park looks set to be the home of one new play space near the shared Maitai walkway. The aim is to attract families to the park and increase activity in the area.
Mayor Rachel Reese says it is about creating a fun place where people can spend time enjoying the outdoors.
“With the completion of the Maitai Walkway it is an ideal time to begin increasing use of the Park. However, creating a space that is easily accessible and provides a high quality play area requires significant investment and Council will be looking for partners to help create an exciting and unique facility which appeals to a wide range of ages,” Mayor Reese says.
On top of this, there is $1.9 million for roading, carparking and landscaping and $308,000 for walkway and cycle connections. This will be used in the area alongside the Trafalgar Centre which is planned to reopen in 2016.
