It is estimated a record number of competitors will participate in this year’s annual Grandmothers Golf Tournament.

Grandmothers from around the region will compete in the 18 hole competition, which will be held at Greenacres Golf club this week with players ages ranging from late 50’s to late 80’s.

“There has been a really good turn-out, numbers have increased from 60 players last year to 97 players this year, the competition is well known as a fun day with great camaraderie among the ladies,” says Greenacres Golf Club Ladies Club Captain, Sally Ussher.

The golf club has a strong women’s division and offers a beginners package “Give Golf A Go” programme to help women learn how to play the game.  They also have a buddy system for new members to ensure players are well looked after until they are confident to play alone.

There will be prizes awarded in four grades, including first time newest grandmother and newest great-grandmother.   Some of the prizes have been donated by Ultimate Golf Fashions, Sharpies Golf Shop and BNZ Bank.

Although it is a competitive tournament, there is a fun aspect too with golfers welcomed to partake in morning tea, prior to the 10.30am tee off and invitation to socialise in the Greenacres Club at the conclusion of the competition.
