Water restrictions introduced for rural catchments

Rural water restrictions are now in place for those who take their water from streams and wells in some catchment areas.

Residents who take water from Wakapuaka River, Teal River, Lud River, Todd Valley Stream, Hillwood Creek and Poorman Valley Stream are required to only take water for essential purposes. This includes fire fighting, drinking, watering stock and domestic washing.

Residents are not allowed to take water for crop irrigation, garden watering, washing cars, houses, or driveways.

The Nelson City Council are recommending residents requiring water for domestic uses should find alternative sources such as  storage tanks.

Council are advising affected residents by mail and staff will be visiting households in the catchment zones.
