A 26 year old Dutch tourist has been reported missing by by friends in Golden Bay sparking a search and rescue operation in the region.
Four Ground teams and a helicopter are searching for Ken Boogers who was going for a walk on the Hilltop Track in the Wharariki Beach area around 9am Saturday.
He was wearing a red t-shirt with shorts and was bare feet. He is described as having long hair tied back in a pony tail. It is believed he had no other gear.
The alarm was raised when he did not arrive at a planned dinner on Sunday evening.
Heavy rain in the area have caused concern for police about the man’s welfare as he was not equipped for the conditions. Two teams of searchers have gone into the area this morning.
As of 4.42pm the search for missing Dutch tourist Ken Boogers has been unsuccessful.
A member of the public has however come forward and confirmed they saw him about midday on Saturday walking on the Pillar Point Track near Wharariki.
Five ground teams will continue searching until dark tonight and will resume tomorrow if Mr Boogers is not found.
According to friends he was familiar with the walking tracks in the area and had been in Golden Bay for about two months.
His family in Holland have also been contacted by police.
Police would like to speak to anyone who has been in the Wharariki area over the weekend and anyone who has walked on the Hilltop Track or the Green Hills Route.
