Rain comes to the region, but not without some havoc

While some gardeners in the region may cherish todays downpour others may not be so lucky with reports of power outages and slips in rural areas.

Both Hope and Riwaka have had reported power outages and trees have fallen in some areas.

Trees have blocked part of the Motueka Vally Highway 3km north of the Dovedale Road intersection as well as Oliver’s Road.

Anybody traveling to the Buller area should be careful of slips and flooding.

Two big slips have reportedly trapped two trucks near the Buller Gorge. Another six to seven trucks have been waiting to pass through the area as diggers clear the area.

We also have an unconfirmed report of a tourist van trapped under one of the slips. Police are speaking to the driver.

Westport farmers are experiencing flooding and farmers are desperately trying to move stock out of swamped paddocks.

Westport resident, Jess Frater, posted her sightings on Facebook.

“I’m from westport and its mental here! all schools closed and most streets blocked from flooding! havent seen it like this in years!”

Anybody planning on going to the beach is advised that parts of Rabbit Island are closed and the ferry has suspended some services.
