Port Nelson expecting drop in exports

Port Nelson is expecting to handle about one million less cartons of apples than forecast due to the hail storm that damaged crops across the Tasman district in November.

In Port Nelson’s six-monthly report, it stated that industry sources and the Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency indicated that about 20 per cent of the export crop may have been lost due to the hail and that will have an effect on the port’s full year financial result.

In the first six months of this financial year Port Nelson has handled 1.230million tonnes of this financial year compared to 1.298million tonnes for the same period last year. Logs, processed forestry, fruit and wine were all slightly lower this year while motor vehicle imports were higher.
