Path upgrade links city to sea

The official opening of the new Maitai walkway was held earlier today.

The pathway is designed to better link the city with the river, Rutherford Park and the marina.

A Maori blessing was held earlier this morning with the official opening at 12.30 today.

Upgrades included widening the walkway, adding new seating areas and improvements to the playground outside the library.

The chair of the works and infrastructure committee, Councillor Eric Davy, says the end result is a fantastic addition to the city’s footpath network and something everyone will be able to enjoy.

“The opening of this first stage of a walkway to link the city to the sea will allow the community to see the future we have for relaxation in our city.”

He says the location is ideal for hosting some new events.

“This walkway will give us real diversity in activity choice, allowing us to hold events such as markets with a background that is both pleasant and relaxing.”

Davy says the contractors had put a lot of effort into building the new walkway.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the contractors for their work throughout the project and for the quality of the finished product.”
