Students piled into the Nayland quad this afternoon as Taylah Acero shaved for a cure.

Taylah, a student at the school, says often people, especially those her age, forget the importance of supporting others when they are unwell.

“My hair will grow back, but for some it may never.”

Both of Taylah’s grandparents had leukemia so the cause hit home for the Nayland College student.

“I just want to make a difference.”

Sponsorship funding for the haircut was raised through her ‘Shave for a Cure’ crowdfunding page. A page set up by Lukemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand in order to facilitate shaving events for the charity.

She set a goal to raise $500 but is already pushing $700 with physical donations. She says she now thinks she can easily get to $1000.

Her friend, Jasmin Kennedy, cut off Taylah’s ponytail which will be made into a wig to support those who have lost their hair to Leukemia.

Tyler Hickmott took charge of the clippers giving Taylah a number two all around.

“Tyler wasn’t planned but I trusted him because he talked himself up the most,” Taylah said.

Taylah is not the only Nayland Student participating in the shave. Dustin Blazek has set up a “shave-tastic” funding page.

Dustin says he is hoping others get involved in the cause.

“You don’t have to shave your head, just show some type of support.”
