Police have undertaken a controlled alcohol purchase operation in order to catch out premisses selling liquor to minors.
Four premises were caught selling alcohol to a minor including New World Motueka, Hop Federation Brewery, Hot Mamas Café and Henry’s Bottle Store.
Nelson bays alcohol harm reduction officer, sergeant Steve Savage, says the disappointing result followed on from an operation earlier in the month in which another four premises were also caught selling alcohol to a minor.
Styx, the Royal Hotel, Elsewhere and Liquid Bar all made sales to a minor during that operation.
14 premises in Richmond, Brightwater, Mapua and Motueka were tested. Sergeant Savage says those who failed the test either did not check for ID or, when the volunteer was unable to produce ID, they made the sale anyway.
“Licence holders should be in no doubt about their responsibilities to ensure they are not selling to under age people. They should also be aware that we are out checking on a regular basis. To have businesses continuing to fail in their responsibility is frustrating.”
The Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority has been informed of the results to take futher action.
