The retired couple that lost their home to a fire on Friday were being comforted by neighbours as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

Leslie and Lesley Morris were unharmed by the fire that started just before noon ripped through their home on Arapiki Rd in Stoke.

Neighbours spoken to by Nelson Live suggested that the fire started in the garage, but that hasn’t been confirmed by the fire service.

The couple are well-known members of the community. Their son Andy Morris, says the couple lost a lot of photos. “Bit of bad news today with my parents losing everything in a house and car fire. Both are ok but lots of photos etc lost.”

A neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, says Les is a member of the Nelson Model Aero Club. “His favourite plane is in the trailer outside the house so it’s safe. Her car is gone but his is safe,” he says.

The fire has completely destroyed the home and caused it to collapse on itself.

Nelson woman Tamsin Jackson-James wrote on Facebook: “I’ve been watching it from my deck for the last hour or so. Sounded like the whole fire brigade from both Nelson and Stoke were there.”

Janelle McKeown wrote on her Facebook page: “Sounded like a warzone here with all the sirens. It’s dying down now.”

Black smoke was seen from as far away as Motueka, Richmond and Nelson. At least four fire trucks from Nelson, Richmond and Stoke fire stations attended the fire.
