Club rugby preview

After a stunning first week of senior club rugby, the region’s six club teams will again head into battle today.

Our match of the week in the Car Company division one competition is Stoke hosting Wanderers at Nayland College. Stoke opened a few eyes last week, thrashing a fancied Nelson side and they will have plenty of confidence heading into today’s clash with last year’s runners up.

Wanderers had a heavy loss against Waimea Old Boys last week and will not want to drop their first two games of the competition, especially after their great early-season form over the past few seasons, so it should be a cracker of a game.

The match kicks off at 3pm and our pick is for a Stoke win.

Out in Richmond, Waimea Old Boys will host Marist at Jubilee Park. The defending champion Waimea side easily pushed past Wanderers last week but Marist have a big point to prove after narrowly losing to Kahurangi in last week’s triple-header at Trafalgar Park.

Kick off at Jubilee Park is at 3pm. Our pick is a Waimea win.

The final game of the round sees Kahurangi host Nelson at Cooks Reserve in Riwaka. Nelson’s young side would have learnt a lot from their beating at the hands of Stoke last week and coaches Kade Heki and Andrew Goodman would have had a bit to say at training this week.

Nelson will improve as the season progresses so now is the time to try and tip them up. While Kahurangi came off a good win over Marist last week, our pick is for a Nelson win. Kick off at 3pm.

Results and photos from today’s games will be on this afternoon.
