Helicopter rescue saves man from Buller


An upturned truck was found wedged between trees down a bank in the Lower Buller Gorge early this morning.

The driver of the small rental truck raised the alarm around 5am when people at Berlins Camp heard the man’s cries for help.

The man was clinging to a tree after being swept about 200m downstream. A helicopter was called in to winch him out of the river as rescuers were unable to reach him on foor.

He has been taken to Westport Hospital for medical treatment.

Inquiries into the incident are still under way.
