Team assembled to restore yacht

A team of volunteers from the Nelson Coastguard has been assembled to restore a donated yacht.

The yacht is a 20 foot Red Wing trailer sailor, that was donated to the Coastguard by the Nelson Weekly newspaper and its sister paper, Waimea Weekly.

The volunteers from the Coastguard will spend the next year tidying it up, before raffling it off.

They hope to raise as much as $20,000 from the project.

Graeme Richards from the Coastguard, says the donation “blew them away” but they are now in the planning phase, figuring out what they need for the yacht.

“First thing we’re doing is getting it cleaned up, inside and out. the inside of the hull is pretty dirty, its had a lot of rain water in it so it’s got tide marks inside.”

The wiring will also need to be pulled out and then rewired from scratch, but the project isn’t huge, says Graeme.

And with the mast and rigging expected to be up this time next month, it won’t be long before the yacht begins to look the part.
