New development at Richmond ‘gateway’

Nelson company, Coman Holdings Limited, is considering plans to develop land adjacent to the ASB Aquatic Centre that could transform the intersection of Champion and Salisbury roads into the new northern gateway to Richmond.

Last month, Progressive Enterprises announced it had purchased land from Richmond Funeral Services on the other side of Salisbury Road, potentially for a new Countdown supermarket. Now Coman Holdings has confirmed it is planning to develop 5260 square metres of land at 149 Salisbury Rd that it purchased from the Tasman District Council – the land is opposite Raeward Fresh.

“We haven’t yet made any decisions about what we will build on the site,” Coman Holdings director Bill Coman says. “We are considering a number of options and are talking with interested parties.

“The size of the land means there could be more than one development. You could do a variety of things there, including retail, motels, cafes and other possible businesses.”

Bill says the zoning of the land means it cannot be used for residential development.

Coman Holdings Limited purchased the land because it is ideally situated as a destination on the edge of Richmond, and close to Stoke and two major retirement villages.

“There is a lot of residential development occurring around that part of Richmond and it’s close enough to attract people from Stoke as well. We didn’t know about the Countdown development when we purchased the land, but that just added to the viability of the site.”

Work has already started on constructing an entranceway to the site and Bill says they are “certainly keen to get on with it”. However, the timing of the development would hinge on “securing an anchor tenant and developing and finalising a conceptual design”.
