A piece of the recovered memorial cross, stolen from Tahunanui Drive.

Stolen cross found at beach

A memorial cross stolen on the 20th anniversary of a deadly car crash has been found at Tahuna beach.

The cross belonging to the Tasker family went missing on the 20th anniversary of the crash that killed Ross Tasker. His daughter Karina Tasker was devastated at the time and appealed to the public for help to find it.

Last week Nelson man Steve Williams says he was reading the article in the Nelson Weekly and wondered if a piece of broken wood his daughter found could have been a part of it.

“My four year old daughter found a piece of wood with the name Tasker on it. I thought it was the name if a boat.”

Steve got in touch with a very happy Karina who confirmed it was a piece of the cross.

Karina says she will keep the broken cross and has pushed ahead with plans to erect a steel cross where the old one once stood. “I’m so happy, it means a heck of a lot to me.”
