Lynda and Peter Hanna help raise $34,965 for Ranui House in Christchurch.

Community gets behind Ranui House

The organisers of a fundraising drive for Ranui House in Christchurch are thrilled with the response.

Last year Nelson Weekly told the story of Peter and Lynda Hanna. As Lynda fought a battle with cancer Peter stayed in Ranui House, an accommodation block near Christchurch Hospital, and quickly met a lot of other Nelsonians supporting their loved ones through a similar journey. When Peter and Lynda returned home, Peter wanted to do what he could to help the house that had been a huge help for him.

They organised a music concert, a golf fundraiser, a hangi and a quiz night, in total raising $34,965.

“Ranui was just magic when I was there. I went there that afternoon and they sorted me out with a room, and it was just a few hundred metres from the hospital. It meant we didn’t have to think about accommodation, we could just concentrate on helping Lynda get well,” he says.

The music concert fundraiser held last November raised $9000, the hangi at the Wanderers clubrooms in January raised $2100, the golf tournament in March raised $11,400 and the quiz night this month at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms  raised $8560.

The remaining $3855 came from outside donations from people around the South Island.

Lynda says the support of the community was fantastic and also thanked the Weekly for covering each of the fundraising events to help promote them.

“Peter and I would like to thank you very much for your support. You have been really great to work with, this is all to the benefit of Ranui House.”
