Thousands welcome Santa to Nelson

The festive season was kicked off on Trafalgar St with thousands of children and adults lining the kerb to see the annual Nelson Santa Parade.

The Nelson parade was first up this year, and falling on December 1, it was the perfect opportunity to get everyone in the Christmas spirit.

Organiser Huup Waagen labelled this year’s event as “amazing” and says the weather couldn’t have been better. “It was a beautiful day and we were very lucky with the weather,” he says. “The weather is everything for the parade. If it’s scorching hot then everyone in the parade gets tired. It was all great.”

More than 40 floats were entered this year, and they ranged from businesses, schools, churches, musical groups and community events. “It’s awesome and if they’re involved in this community you can always have a win-win. You show your organisation or your business and at the same time you can vent your creativity.”

Eight floats would be chosen later this week and rewarded for their originality, creativity and quality. Following the parade, a carnival was held at Trafalgar Park.
