The roller derby season is well and truly underway for Nelson’s local team, with Saturday night’s clash between the Sirens of Smash and their Wellington rivals resulting in a high score battle.

While the game, which was held at the Tahunanui Roller Skating Rink, didn’t end in a win for the Sirens, who lost the bout against the Richter City Convicts 228 to 146, team member Tara Forde says it was nice to compete in front of a home crowd. “It was great to  have a really supportive home crowd, hearing people cheering, it was good fun.”
The Sirens of Smash have been competing on the national roller derby scene for the past three years and are now in training for the National championship which will be in Palmerston North in October.
